UPDATE: our Reading Room is re-opening, with changes. See here for up to date info.

For the safety and wellbeing of all of our visitors, volunteers and staff, Public Record Office Victoria has made the decision to temporarily close the Victorian Archives Centre to the public as a precautionary measure during this challenging time.

This closure applies to the following:
•    Victorian Archives Centre Reading Room visits, both Public Record Office Victoria and National Archives of Australia
•    Victorian Archives Centre talks, tours and events
•    In the Shadows exhibition visits
•    Volunteer program activities

If you have recently ordered a record for viewing in the reading room, your order will be kept in our system until we re-open.

Archive centres in Ballarat, Geelong and Bendigo are also closed with orders on hold.

Our catalogue is still available to search at prov.vic.gov.au with digitised collection items available online. Staff will continue to answer research questions submitted through our website and on social media.

We will closely monitor the advice from the Victorian Government and Victorian Chief Health Officer and will keep you all updated about plans to reopen.

For information about Coronavirus (COVID-19), and how to reduce the risk of infection and slow its spread in our community, visit the Department of Health and Human Services website: www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/coronavirus

Thank you for your understanding. Take care of one another.

Update for online users 28 April 2020

As our system will not allow us to "turn off" orders, during our closure we have still had many record orders come through. Please note that orders placed during our closure period will be cancelled, as no staff are on site to retrieve records.

Once we reopen, you can reorder your records and visit our Reading Room to view them.
