Function / Content

This volume appears to be the register of inward and outward correspondence of the assistant to the Inspector of Fisheries at Port Fairy. (Items of correspondence were not allocated numbers from the book.) Most of the correspondence received was from the Inspector of Fisheries and most of the outward correspondence was dispatched to the Inspector of Fisheries also.

Like the Inspector of Fisheries, assistants to Inspector of Fisheries administered the Fisheries Act 1912 and previous and subsequent related acts. The acts regulated many aspects of the fishing industry including licences for (commercial) fishermen, the renewal of boat registrations, the catch, the waters, fishing seasons, fishing methods and the sale of fish.

Police constables were sometimes appointed as assistants to the Inspector of Fisheries, and it would appear that the Officer in Charge of Police at Port Fairy filled the position at Port Fairy in 1916 at least. (See transcription of correspondence dated 18 February 1916 in the book.)

This volume was thought to be a record of the Port Fairy Court of Petty Sessions until it was described by an archivist in 2001.

How to use the records

Researchers are requested to use the microfiche version of the record (VPRS 3366/P1) to save wear and tear on the original volume.

Entries were generally made in chronological order by date of correspondence. However, some lists of fishing licences issued and boat registrations for years 1927 to 1933 were entered at the back of the volume.

Recordkeeping system

Microfiche: Unit 1 of the microfiche covers the contents of the first part of the book, 1913 to 1949, in chronological order as in the original volume. Unit 2 of the microfiche covers the entries made starting from the back of the volume, 1927 to 1933, listing fishing licences and boat registrations as renewed annually.

Please note that there is also information for the years 1927 to 1933 in the front part of the book.
