Description of this SeriesDescription of this Series
  • How to use the Records
Check the units for the period when the prisoner commenced his sentence. VPRS 526 is an Alphabetical Index to Register of Prisoners Received. It can be used to determine the date when the prisoner commenced his sentence.

P0 and P1 consignments: Units 1 to 5 inclusive in the P consignment are fragile as is the unit in the P1 consignment. They have been closed under Section 11 of the Public Records Act, 1973, in the interests of their preservation. For this reason, these records are not available for public inspection.

  • Function / Content
Prisoners, whose prison sentence was longer than six months, were photographed at the start and end of their imprisonment. The practice of taking photographs of prisoners commenced circa 1872. Photographs were in addition to the detailed physical descriptions entered in the register and served as an aid to identify the prisoner in case of escape, for example.

Only prisoners at Pentridge and Melbourne Gaol were photographed.

Photograghs of prisoners also appear in some units of VPRS 515 Male Prisoner Register.

  • Recordkeeping System
The photographs are arranged in volumes approximating a chronological order by date that the prisoner commenced his sentence.
