Description of this SeriesDescription of this Series
  • How to use the Records
Consult the consignment details to locate plans of interest

The wiki page below contains some background on the State Coal Mine Archival Collection and a downloadable dataset describing collection items:

    http://wiki.prov.vic.gov.au/index.php/State_Coal_Mine_Archival_Collection_Dataset

  • Function / Content
The collection was reprocessed by PROV volunteers in late 2011 and has been arranged into four series. Broadly speaking:

VPRS 12982 consists of drawings of the design and maintenance of the Power House at Wonthaggi, and graphs to chart progress of work.

VPRS 12983 consists of technical drawings of West Port Mine (New Zealand) and other Australian and overseas mines.

VPRS 12984 consists of drawings relating directly to the SCM at Wonthaggi. Subjects include general engineering drawings of mines, plants, equipment and buildings (P1); geology, boring and sections (P2); drainage and sidings (P3); and land issues, accidents, incidents and other miscellaneous drawings (P4).

VPRS 16791 consists of any material not consistent with the subject areas of VPRS 12982, 12983 and 12984.

  • Recordkeeping System
There is evidence of several record keeping systems within the State Coal Mine archival collection. Efforts have been made to preserve these, but the systems are unclear and appear incomplete.

    Volunteers processing the plans captured:

    1) the most unique data element, and
    2) the most likely textual title of the plan

In the subsequent columns, any consistently evident data elements were captured.

Dates were captured from wherever available on the plans, with priority given to the any apparently final date, signed off at completion of the plan.

There is no system apparent in the records in this series - as stated above, they are the records which did not fit into the systems and content areas of VPRS 12982, 12983 and 12984.
