Description of this SeriesDescription of this Series
  • How to use the Records
A detailed item list, prepared by Brian McKinley for the Education Department some time between 1996 - 2003, is in VPRS 14520 / P1, unit 1. His handwritten notes from c.1984 are also included.

  • Function / Content
This collection features items of various formats that document the role of the Education Department and the school children of Victoria in the rebuilding of the school at Villers-Brettoneux, France, after its destruction in 1918. Re-named Victoria College, the Ecole de Garcons (Boys' School) in Villers-Brettoneux was destroyed, along with much of the town during the battle on 25/4/1918 when the Australian 13th and 15th Brigades recaptured it from the Germans in a battle in which over 1200 Australians were killed.

Some of the postcards in this series may have been brought back from Villers-Brettoneux by the Director of Education, Frank Tate, who went there as a guest for an official ceremony in the 1920s.

  • Recordkeeping System
Items in this series have been arranged chronologically within subjects.
