Description of this SeriesDescription of this Series
  • How to use the Records
Consult the Consignment Details for the unit containing the bundle for the time period for which information is required.

For information regarding specific persons from 1839 to 1853 consult the Return in the P1 consignment. This might indicate the year bundle in which a file might be located.

  • Function / Content
Under Governor Gipps Land Regulations 1831, dealing with the minimum upset price for land and leases, Officers of His Majesty's Navy and Marines retiring from the service, or going on half pay, as [were] held out to Military Officers by the regulations for the disposal of land were to be entitled to a remission of the purchase money. The amount was to be determined according to " the respective periods of their service.

This series consists of some remaining files of inwards correspondence regarding applications by military and naval officers for the remission of the purchase price of land in Victoria. Inwards correspondence is annotated with the substance of replies . Files may include the application by the officer, details of the officer's service, the documents giving written permission for the officer to go on half pay or retire for the purpose of settling in the colonies (from the General Commander in Chief or the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty in London), the recommendation of the Board of Land and Works to the Governor- in - Council and the decision of the Governor - in - Council. Some files may contain interpretations of the Regulations or a copy of them.

Included in the P1 consignment are two Returns - one for 1840 and one for the time period 1839 - 1853. This latter Return lists all applications for remission from 1839 to 1853. Details given are the date of certification, the name of the applicant, his rank in the army or navy and the amount of remission allowed. In the Remarks column are notes of whether the person was still resident, deceased, had left the colony or details were not known.

  • Recordkeeping System
Corresppondence is in bundles according to the year of the final piece. Often correspondence in the file continued over more than one year with each piece received being registered in the inwards correspondence systems of the Superintendent Port Phillip District (VA 473) or the Colonial Secretary (VA 876) or the Chief Secretary (VA 475). Successive pieces were then top-numbered leading to the accumulation of a file.
