  • How to use the Records
    It is not necessary to use this series to find a legal opinion or precedent in VPRS 9475 Legal Opinions and Precedents. Use VPRS 9476 Data Base for the Management and Control of Legal Opinions and Precedents instead.

    Use this series only to find the relevant correspondence file number if it is not quoted on an opinion or precedent found in VPRS 9475. To do this, note the section and Act of the opinion or precedent in VPRS 9475 and examine the relevant division in this series. Note, however, that the series has been disturbed. Therefore it might be necessary to look at all cards if the required one is not in what appears to be its place.

    It is not certain how cards in this series were arranged while the series was in use. Cards from the series appear to have been bundled for data entry to VPRS 9476 Data Base for the Management and Control of Legal Opinions and Precedents in October 1994 and not returned to their original order.

    The rearrangement occurred as a result of a rearrangement of VPRS 9475 Legal Opinions and Precedents, which the series indexed, in October 1994. VPRS 9476 was compiled at the same time and used to retrieve items from VPRS 9475 from then. It appears that VPRS 9618 was not used by the agency after October 1994, even though cards in this series contained some information which was not transcribed to VPRS 9476.

    VPRS 9618 contained a card for each opinion or precedent in VPRS 9475. Each card recorded:

    the subject (usually the relevant Act and section),
    the date of receipt,
    the author (of an opinion),
    the relevant correspondence file number in VPRS 3844 Water Supply Correspondence Files or VPRS 6008 General Correspondence Files,
    the reference number (i.e. the opinion number within VPRS 9475), and
    a synopsis.

    The series appears to have been divided into a number of sections:

    Water Act 1989,
    other Acts,
    opinions,
    definitions, and
    Water Act [probably Water Act 1958, but not specified].

    The meaning of some of these terms is not clear.

    The cards appear to have been originally arranged lexicographically by subject matter or numerically by section of Act within each division. As mentioned above, these sequences have been disturbed.
