Description of this SeriesDescription of this Series
  • How to use the Records
    Although not created for this purpose, VPRS 11958 Case Files Register, VPRS 11959 List of Case Hearings and VPRS 11968 Index to Case Files may provide access to records in this series. PROV has no other control records in custody for VPRS 9599.

    This series has been split into a number of consignments due to the varying subject matters of the files. Each consignment reflects a different subject matter and researchers should check which consignment contains the file(s) they require (see list of consignments P1-P6 below).

    Researchers can therefore also scan the consignment details for the period and subject matter in which they are interested.

  • Function / Content
    This series contains files which document Industrial Relations Commission cases including appeals against determinations made by Conciliation and Arbitration Boards, applications to vary awards, revocation of recognition of employer/employee associations and until 1992, applications for the establishment of Conciliation and Arbitration Boards. In 1993 the Industrial Relations Commission was reconstituted as the Employee Relations Commission, however, this record keeping system was continued. Other types of files were then included in this system such as Unfair Dismissals, Mediation Files and Appeal, Award and Dispute Files.

    Papers on file will include submissions made by the parties to the case as well as exhibits, transcripts of evidence, general correspondence, deliberations and the determination of the Commission.

    Consignments
    Due to the varying subject matters of the files this series has been split into six consignments to reflect the different subjects, as follows:

    * P1 contains the Commission Files,

    * P2 contains the Board Files,

    * P3 contains Unfair Dismissals
    (researchers should note that information concerning Unfair Dismissals prior to 1993 is contained within the relevant Conciliation and Arbitration Board Minutes, refer to VPRS 5467),

    * P4 contains Mediation Files,

    * P5 contains Appeal, Award and Dispute Files, and

    * P6 contains Industry Sector Case Files.

    Previous and related series

    This series commenced in 1983 with the introduction of an annual single filing system. Files documenting similar cases between the period 1943 and 1982 were arranged in a single number sequence (refer to VPRS 5468).

    Files relating to hearings by Conciliation and Arbitration Boards were included in this series from the beginning of 1988 when the separate series of Board Hearings Files (VPRS 9600) was discontinued. The P2 consignment of this series contains all of the extant Board hearing files for the years 1988-1992.

  • Recordkeeping System
    The files were registered in an annual single number system allocated when the application or initial piece of correspondence pertaining to the matter was received. Under this system files were allocated a sequential number linked to the year of file creation. For example, file number 2/83 represents the second file created in 1983.

    From 1984 file numbers were allocated from a series of bound registers. These registers (known as Case Tracking Labels) have been transferred to PROV custody as VPRS 11958.

    For the 1983 portion of this series access can be gained by either consulting the List of Hearings (VPRS 11959) or the Index to Case Files (VPRS 11968).
