How to use the Records
Consult the Records Description List and the alphabetical index of addressees at the front of each volume.
Function / Content
The first Clerk of Works, responsible for the construction, maintenance, rental and furnishing of public buildings was appointed in 1837. This office continued to be responsible for these functions until 1851 and separation from New South Wales, when the former Clerk of Works, Henry Ginn, became Colonial Architect. By 1854 there had been an amalgamation of the functions of the Colonial Architect and of the Colonial Engineer with the position of Colonial Architect no longer existing. The Chief Architect continued to report to the Colonial Engineer. The Colonial Engineer and the Central Road Board (VA 2803) continued as the major public works authorities until the appointment of the Commissioner of Public Works in 1855
This series contains copies of minutes (or memoranda) from the Colonial Architect (1851-1854) and the Colonial Engineer (1854) with copies of the replies received. These Minutes were directed to the Lieutenant Governor and other high officials and deal with costings, tenders and arrangements for the construction, maintenance and fitting and furnishing of public buildings.
The P1 consignment of this series was previously registered as VPRS 964 Colonial Engineers Minute Book. It was reserialised in 2001 as part of the ARAD Project.
Recordkeeping System
Minutes were given a consecutive number recommencing each year. Names of addressees are alphabetically indexed at the front of each volume with the folio (or page) on which the Minute appears.
