Description of this SeriesDescription of this Series
  • How to use the Records
    1. Consult VPRS 898 for the registration of the correspondence regarding a specific teacher. An estimate will need to then be made as to where in the consecutive number sequence this piece of correspondence may have been filed.

    2. Estimate a chronological period in the number sequence and select the unit containing records with a specific range of numbers.

  • Function / Content
This series contains records relating to applications by pupil-teachers, untrained teachers and interested candidates for admission to courses of training as teachers. Candidates were examined by an Inspector to determine their level of academic knowledge and suitability for training. This series consists of the reports by Inspectors forwarded to the Board of Education. A pro forma was completed giving the teacher's name, school and position (if applicable), the date of examination, the Inspector's recommendation and the result gained by the teacher in the examinations taken in a standard list of subjects. This was then signed by the Inspector.

These pro forma are enclosed in cover sheets which give the date of the correspondence, the date of its registration and the registration number (see VPRS 938 Register of Inward Correspondence, Annual Single Number System) and the subject of the piece of correspondence. These cover sheets are annotated with the Inspector's recommendation and notes of any other enclosures. Where the teacher had a previous examination report this was also included with the latest one. Other correspondence may be from the teacher, particularly with respect to arrangements for attendance at the entrance examination or character references for the candidate.

  • Recordkeeping System
The records are arranged in consecutive number order which is roughly chronological. Where papers with a particular number are missing they may be found on a later record for the same person, generally when an examination was retaken due to earlier failure. There is no index or chronological listing of this series.
