How to use the Records
Consult the alphabetical index of schools at the front of the volume to find the page upon which records pertaining to a specific school are.
Function / Content
Each year, an Inspector visited each school to evaluate its facilities and operation. This series contains the pro forma Inspector's reports for 1863. Each report was received as a piece of correspondence and was allocated a registered number recorded on the front of the report.
Every student at the school was examined in relation to Standards of attainment in the core subjects of the primary school curriculum. These Standards were printed on the front of the pro forma. Details were completed of the name of the school, its roll number, the date of the examination, the number of students on the roll, the number of students above the age of seven examined and the number examined under the age of seven. Another table gave the standard, the number of students at that standard, the average age and the average time spent examining each child.
All students at the school were listed by name with age in years and month, their parents' occupation and the standard they were judged to have attained in Reading, Writing, Arithmetic, Grammar and Geography.
Sections were given for completion under a number of general headings. Not all queries were responded to by the Inspector. Sections were given for:
- description of the school house and premises
- school furniture
- organisation and discipline
- a description and evaluation of the teacher and any assistants and / or monitors and the methods of instruction used
- details regarding of the keeping of the school register, roll and accounts
- an evaluation of whether the Rules and regulations of the Board were being observed
- an evaluation of the interest shown by the Local Committee
- an assessment of whether defects noted at a previous inspection had been remedied and
- any defects observed.
Also included in the volume are the Probable Income of the school under payment by results and Schools Under Standard.
Recordkeeping System
Inspections are filed in school roll number order. An alphabetical index of school names gives the folio upon which the report for each school begins.
