How to use the Records
This index may be used to identify files in VPRS 8916 Subject Files: Annual Single Number (Personnel Department) by job or position classification. The index is arranged in 26 alphabetical sections (A to Z) and within each section, index cards are arranged alphabetically by position title or classification.
If researchers locate a card of interest relevant file numbers are listed in a column on the right hand side of the card. The records description lists for VPRS 8916 should be consulted to determine if files of interest have been transferred to PRO. Note that there may be more than one card for each classification and there may be entries on both sides of cards.
Function / Content
This classifications index was created by the Personnel Registry of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SECV) (VA 1002) to provide access to files relating to classifications of positions within the SECV. The index cards are pink in colour. The subjects of files included in the index cover review of positions, training schemes, induction courses for apprentices, wage rates, shift work roster etc. It is assumed that the index was created for the same period that VPRS 8916 was created, that is, 1978 to 1991.
Information recorded on the index cards includes:
classification or job title;
card number (used when there is more than one card for a classification);
date (of file creation);
precis (which generally equates to a files title); and
file number.
Recordkeeping System
The cards are arranged alphabetically by title of classified positions, for example, accounts officer, bookbinders, bricklayers, cleaners, cable joiners, wordprocessors, etc.
This index was created as part of the recordkeeping system which included the files (VPRS 8916), a file register (VPRS 8917), indexes to letters/files by name, (VPRS 8920), location (VPRS 8921), by subject (VPRS 8918 and 8919)) and by Commonwealth Conciliation and Arbitration Commission case number (VPRS 8923). The series description for VPRS 8916 includes a fuller description of the whole recordkeeping system.
