Description of this SeriesDescription of this Series
  • How to use the Records
The files are arranged alphabetically by name of the hostel.

  • Function / Content
This series consists of capital expenditure work files relating to the construction, alteration and extension of Teachers college hostels.

The files usually contain the original paper setting out the case for the new building or for additions; the Education Department's requisition for works; the Public Works Department's approvals; plans; maps; the Minister's approval for expenditure; and correspondence concerning the proposal, the letting of the contract and progress made.

The correspondence relating to the college hostel exchanged with the State College of Victoria (VA 437) was attached to the files in this series. Hence the contents date range extend upto 1977.

  • Recordkeeping System
The files in this series are arranged alphabetically by name of Teachers College Hostel.

This series is one of a number of subsequent series to VPRS 3853 Building Files : Teachers Colleges and Hostels. Prior to 1956 all correspondence pertaining to Teachers College Hostel construction and maintenance including documentation relating to capital expenditure works were placed on one file created for each college.

From the mid 1950's correspondence relating to specific subject was no longer placed on this building file. These were placed on files within a number of new series created to deal with particular aspects of college hostel construction. These sequences consisted of Furniture Files, Fencing Files, Subsidies Files, Special Grants Files and Land Files and Capital Expenditure Works Files.

With the exception of the capital expenditure works files series most of the series mentioned in the preceding paragraph were authorised for destruction by the Keeper of Public Records in 1992-93.

Capital expenditure works files for Teachers Colleges were maintained separately from 1956 (see VPRS 8797).

This series ended in 1974 when responsibility for the administration of the Teachers colleges/hostels was transferred to the State College of Victoria, (VA 437).
