This series comprises the minutes of the Utility Services Advisory Committee which was initiated by the Housing Commission in 1943. At the first meeting the following bodies were represented:

    The Housing Commission
the Architects Panel (of the Commission)
    Metropolitan Gas Company
    State Electricity Commission
    Colonial Gas Association
    Brighton Gas Company
    Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board
Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works
    Victorian Railways.

The Committee was initiated to meet the need for preparing to select, acquire and develop suitable sites for a post-war (World War II) housing program. The aim was to be able to address the "discrepancy between construction and a total program for the State of approximately 15,000 (houses) per year", (minutes of first meeting of the Committee).

The Committee, during its period of operation, appointed a number of sub-committees to assess and report on the various sites under consideration. Sub-committee minutes are also included in this series. The membership of both the Committee and sub-committees varied over time depending upon the matter or site under discussion. For example, representatives of Municipalities local to the site being examined were involved in discussions in Committee. Other bodies which participated in the Committee included the Education Department, Country Roads Board, Postmaster General's Department. The last set of minutes in this consignment (dated 4 February 1954) do not make it clear whether that meeting was the last meeting of the Committee. The end date for this series has not, therefore, been established and is determined to be ?1954.
