The series comprises electoral statistics apparently compiled from the forms sent by the relieving officers after each election.
The P1 consignment consists of bound volumes/a bundle/a loose leaf binder containing election statistics for the period 1859 to 1861 and 1864 to 1988.
The statistical information relating to elections is recorded separately under various headings/sections which includes:
area, population of the district/province, name of the returning officer, gazettal date (of notice required to be given prior to issue of a writ) recorded on top of the page. The election process is initiated by the issue of a writ - the formal document issued on behalf of the Queen commanding the Returning Officer to whom it is addressed to proceed to the holding of an election. The writ specifies the date by which nominations for the vacancy are to be lodged, requires the Returning Officer to conduct a poll on that date and the writ is returned with the name of the member.
particulars of election - date of issue of writ, nomination day, polling day, return day.
proceedings under writs issued - candidates elected, voles polled, total votes recorded, expenses of election chargeable to the public fund.
Register of Elections : (name of the division, name of rate and non-rate payers on the roll, page number reference (refers to the page number of the same volume where the name, date of appointment of the Registrar for that district and the State of the electoral roll is recorded).
The information on appointment of registrars is not included after 1918. However, the same information is recorded in two other series : for the period 1924 to 1937 see Salaries of Electoral Registrars and Appointments of Registrars VPRS 8188/P1 and for the period 1937 to 1969 see Appointments of Polling Places and Electoral Registrars, VPRS 8187/P1.
Division and Polling Places, 1864 to 1918; (list of divisions and polling places from 1918 to 1988 is recorded in another series (see Appointments of Polling Places and Electoral registrars VPRS 8187/P1).
This series appears to have been the only sources of statistics prior to 1924. The Statistics form the basis of election statistics booklets which were published by the State Electoral Office from 1924.
