This series is thought to have been created in 1963 to summarily record general financial transactions undertaken by the Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board (VA 2694).

Accounts documented in this series were previously dealt with by VPRS 7942 General Journal : Combined Operations prior to 1963. After 1963 this series acted as a subsidiary journal to VPRS 7942, periodically posting its totals to the General Journal : Combined Operations.

Transactions were written up each month and subsequently posted to one of a number of ledgers. Columns in the journals indicated that the ledgers were:

    1. General Ledger
    2. Accounts Receivable Ledger
    3. Operations Ledger.

The annotation "D.C." suggests the existence of another type of ledger (could have been "Debtors Cards") which was also part of that accounting system, however, no such record was extant at time of transfer of this series into PRO custody.

The P1 consignment of this series consists of two different types of records which were maintained in pairs, both having the same financial year date range, although they were numbered sequentially. Both volumes in each pair comprise similar types of transactions, although the second volume has a different format; in that the accounts concerned were static for the duration of the financial year, while the recording of debits and credits to the ledgers for each 28 days was done on pages half the width which were turned to match the accounts. The precise differences between each volume in a pair is not known.

Unit 1 of the P1 consignment was marked "No.3", and its concurrent volume marked "No.4". They shared a date range of 1964 to 1965; thus it is thought that the first two volumes of this series (which are no longer extant) shared a date range of 1963 to 1964.

It is probable that this series continued after 1966 but no other volumes were extant at time of transfer of the series into PRO custody.
