How to use the Records
This series was created in 1922 by the Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board (VA 2694) to chronologically record the monthly amounts of money concerned with Wages and Stores. The P1 consignment of this series comprises a single volume extant, its entries dated July 1922 to January 1925.
The volume was divided into two sections, the first half being for the allocation of Wages and the remaining half being devoted to the allocation of Stores. The various Wages and Stores accounts had their monthly debits for each particular financial year arranged with reference to their respective ledger folio numbers.
Entries from this series were posted as credit totals to VPRS 7890 General Ledgers - Cable Operations under specific account names and referenced by journal folio numbers. VPRS 7893 General Journal - Cable Operations was the previous series to the Wages part of this series. Stores appear to have been a new area of financial consideration in 1922, but it is possible that they had been incorporated into VPRS 7893 too, under "Sundries".
After January 1925 it is thought that the dual functions of this journal were absorbed by two separate journals - a Wages Journal and a Stores Journal (neither of which was extant at time of transfer of this series into PRO custody).
