This series consists of petitions which were presented to the Melbourne Tramway Trust (VA 2692) from residents, ratepayers and property owners seeking the extension or construction of new tramlines. The P1 consignment consists of two petitions which have been rolled together and wrapped in a brown paper cover marked, "Deputations and Petitions".

The first petition is dated 27 May 1884 and sought the extension or construction of a tramline along Lygon Street to serve the Brunswick area. This petition is made up of a number of sheets of blue paper glued to form a long strip which has been rolled into a cylinder. The text of the petition occupies the top portion of the strip with the remainder recording signatures and addresses of petitioners. The petition was presented to the Trust at its meeting on 30 May 1884 by the Mayor of Brunswick and the matter was subsequently referred to the Trust's Works Committee for consideration (see VPRS 7203/P1, Trust Minute Books, unit 1, page 55; VPRS 7202/P1, Committee Minute Books, units 1 and 2).

The second petition is undated. The signatories sought to have a tramline extension constructed along Latrobe Street from Spencer Street to Elizabeth Street to serve the West Melbourne area. The text of the petition occupies the top of the first page with signatures and addresses of petitioners being recorded below and on additional pages attached. This petition is probably that which was presented to the Trust at its meeting on 27 May 1887 by a deputation "to advocate the adoption of the Latrobe Street Line" (see VPRS 7203/P1, Unit 1, page 355).

These petitions were not incorporated into the Trust's correspondence system. Correspondence may be found in VPRS 7859 Inward Registered Correspondence which relates to petitioners seeking meetings with the Trust.

    Conservation Statement

The documents are rolled together into a cylinder. One petition has blue papers joined end to end. It appears that the glue used may be causing discolouration to the papers. Both petitions show foxing. The petitions are enclosed in a brown paper wrapper.
