This series consists of a register of inward correspondence maintained by the Melbourne Tramways Trust (VA 2692) between 5 September 1884 and the latter half of 1915. This series controls VPRS 7859 Inward Registered Correspondence through a simple sequential number registration system.

The register is comprised of a single volume which records:

    - from whom letter was received
    - registration number
    - date of letter
    - date of receipt of letter
    - date registered
    - how dealt with
    - subject of letter

Various details were recorded in the 'How dealt with' column indicating whether the letter was attached directly to a file; whether it was referred to one of the Committees which functioned within the agency; as well as whether a letter was sent in reply. Copies of outward letters of the agency can be found in VPRS 7761 Outward Letter Books. The use of red ink and pencil crosses in the register presumably indicates that the letter was eventually filed. The volume extant was not completely used. It is evident from the correspondence extant (see Unit 8 of VPRS 7859/P1) that the letters received by the Melbourne Tramways Trust in its final months of operation were not registered. Although only a handful of letters from this time are extant in VPRS 7859, it is quite likely that some of the letters can be found within the correspondence systems of the subsequent agency VA 2693 Tramway Board.

The Engineers Office of the Melbourne Tramways Trust also had an identical sequential number registration system for inward correspondence between October 1884 and July 1894 -
see: VPRS 7192 Inward Correspondence Register : Engineers Office
VPRS 7208 Inward Registered Correspondence : Engineers Office

It is evident that the registration of correspondence normally undertaken by the Engineer's Office was not transferred to the responsibility of the Secretary's Office after July 1894.

Included with this series is an additional volume which was used to record incoming correspondence between 1 April and 21 May 1884 prior to the creation of the separate registers. Although most of the information was subsequently transferred to the registers it has been retained for its additional details and to show the development of the Trust's correspondence registration system.
