This series comprises inward, and carbon copies of outward correspondence, apparently kept by Mr P.J. Pringle, Consulting Engineer to the Tramway Board (VA 2693). It is evident that Mr Pringle was aiding in the preparation of a claim that the Board was bringing against the Melbourne Tramways and Omnibus Company (VA 2976) for breach of agreement of the company's lease from the Melbourne Tramways Trust (VA 2692). Correspondence is primarily between Mr Pringle and variously, the Tramway Board, the Solicitor to the Tramway Board, and other persons assisting with the Board's case. The content of the correspondence therefore relates to the preparation of the Board's claim and is related to records found in VPRS 7821 Arbitration Case files : Melbourne Tramway and Omnibus Company and Tramway Board.

The P1 Consignment comprises two loose leaf binders (units 1 and 2) and one box (unit 3). Letters were arranged chronologically with the earliest letters beginning at the back of the binder. Each letter was also numbered sequentially in red or blue pencil at the top right corner, the numbering also beginning from the back of each binder with number 1. Several Letters at the front of the correspondence in Unit 3, subsequent to letter number 541, were not given a registration number.

Unit three (the box) contains a bundle of correspondence (which was removed from its original binder due to extensive corrosion of the binding mechanism) and three alphabetical indexes. Each index has a "To" and "From" column for each letter of the alphabet in which outward and inward correspondence respectively was registered for each correspondent. The first index, labelled, "Letter Book No 2" has entries in red ink, which refer to Letter Book No.2 (unit 2), and brown ink, which refer to Letter Book No.1 (unit 1). The second index is labelled "Letter Book No.3" and the correspondence to which it refers is not extant. The third index is labelled "Letter Book No.4" and refers to the bundle of correspondence in unit 3.

    Conservation Statement

Correspondence in this series is in a variety of inks, eg typewriter ribbon, carbon copy, handwritten ink, on a variety of papers including "good quality" to tissue paper. The binders, for units 1 and 2, are leverarch type and both show considerable rust on the metal parts, with unit 2 covers being quite damaged and rat eaten. Top most correspondence in unit 2 is rucked and brittle.

Will need to have some attention.
