Series consists of the published report and working papers of the Royal Commission on Soldier Settlement.

The Commission was established by Letters Patent on the 21st January 1925 and presented their report on the 23rd October of the same year.

The Commissioners were: James Turnbull, David Park, Thomas James McGailliard and Henry John Wiltshire.

The terms of reference required an inquiry into the state of soldier settlement eight years after its inception under the Discharged Soldier's Settlement Act of 1917 [No.2916].

In particular an assessment of the land set aside for soldier settlement, the provisions of the Discharged Soldier Settlement Acts in relation to financial advances and the arrangements between the Commonwealth and the State for the settlement of discharged soldiers was required.

    The contents include:

Original Letters Patent establishing the Commission and listing the Terms of reference
Copy of letter of appreciation from the Premier
    Maps of settlement areas (1914)
Copy of published report of Mr Justice Pide on Losses due to Soldier Settlement made to the Parliament of the Commonwealth of Australia in 1929
Various working papers including estimates of working conditions for soldier settlers, and reports of visits to soldier settlements
newspaper clippings relating to soldier settlement.

No particular system of arrangement/control is apparent. The volume appears to have also included some data on closer settlement, but this portion of the series is not extant.

At the time of registration it was not certain how the records came into the custody of the Public Record Office.
