Description of this SeriesDescription of this Series
  • How to use the Records
The Richmond Line was opened on 11 November 1885. It was a construction project undertaken by the Melbourne Tramways and Omnibus Company. This series comprises some of the general accounting records relating to the financial transactions which were entered into by the M.T.O.C. for the purposes of realization of the line construction.

The date range of the accounting records was from the beginning of the construction, in 1884, to the conclusion of payment of accounts in 1887. There is evidence of a Cash Book which was a book of original entry in the accounting system, but it was not extant at the time of transfer into PRO custody. The P1 consignment of this series comprises the following records.

    Journal [Unit 1]

This record was used for transferring and adjusting sums of money. Amounts were posted from this Journal to the Ledger under specific account names, referring the user to relevant folio numbers. Entries were made chronologically approximately each month. The Journal was maintained between 20 September 1884 and 12 January 1887. (Only a small portion of the volume has been used).

    Ledger [Unit 2]

Amounts were posted to specific account names in this Ledger from the Journal and the Cash Book. The contents of the Ledger were arranged by account name and with individual entries being made chronologically by date of payment within each specific account.

** Both the Ledger and the Journal were marked with the number "1" on their spines.
