This series contains files relating to various aspects of the operation of the Tramway Board (VA 2693) from 1916 when it commenced functioning, until 1919 when its responsibilities were transferred to the Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board (VA 2694).

The titles of the files in the P1 consignment appear on the Records Description List (item list). These files almost certainly do not represent the Board's entire subject filing system and may in fact be a personal filing system created by an officer of the Board. In any case, no other similar subject files were identified at the time the P1 consignment was transferred to the Public Record Office in 1990.

Further details about the files follow:

Folder 1 'Edinburgh Correspondence' file contains letters, reports, diagrams and plans accumulated by the consulting engineer to the Tramway Board, and relating to communication between him and a tramways agency in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Folder 2 The Australian Tramways Employees Association (A.T.E.A.) file relates to a case against the Tramway Board before an arbitration hearing due to the alleged breach of agreement over the dismissal of John Percy Holmes.

Folder 3 The 'Spencer St Bridge' file contains correspondence and papers relating to traffic congestion on Spencer St. Bridge received by the Secretary to the Tramways Board from the Traffic Board, Public Works Department.

Folder 4 & 5 The 'Clerks Wages Board' and 'Miscellaneous Wages Board' files primarily contain material relating to wage matters with respect to various employee groups, however, the first few bundles of correspondence and papers in Folder 4 relate to general matters concerning the Tramways Board.
