This series contains memoranda, reports, working papers and copies of correspondence relating to many aspects of the operations of the Hawthorn Tramways Trust from the agency's establishment in 1914 until its functions passed to the Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board in February 1920.

These papers have been arranged in files according to the area of tramway operations to which they refer. The subjects covered include accident reports, contracts and tenders, building works, tramway construction, track and equipment maintenance, communications with local councils, staffing, financial statements, insurance and electric supply.

The files comprising the P1 consignment were found stacked in several large boxes, and the order in which they were originally created and maintained was no longer apparent. To aid in the identification of particular files, they have been arranged in alphabetical order by file title. This may correspond to the original system of arrangement.

The dates of the earliest and latest item in each file have been included on the item list. In a few cases the files contain papers dated earlier than 1914 (when the Trust commenced operation) and later than February 1920 (when it ceased functioning). It is likely that those papers which predate the Trust were used to form the basis of the filing system in 1914 because they were of importance to the Trust's operations. Similarly, papers which post-date the Trust were added to files during the first few years of the operation of the Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board, during which time the offices of the former Trust were used as the depot of the Eastern System of the Board's tramway operations.
