This series provides an inventory and valuation of all the assets of the Melbourne Tramway and Omnibus Company at 30 June 1916. The inventory was prepared by the company to comply with section 34(1)(i) of the Tramway Board Act 1915 (No.2828). At this time, the company's lease to operate Melbourne Tramways expired and, under the Act, responsibility for the maintenance and operation of the tramways passed to the newly formed Tramways Board. This Act also stipulated that the Board automatically acquire all the property of the Company and that compensation for this property be determined by arbitration.
These volumes were prepared by the Company in compliance with the Act and to determine the amount of compensation to which it was due. They were also presented as evidence in the Arbitration Case held in the Supreme Court Victoria on 1916. Every aspect of the Company's assets excluding specific leases is listed and valued. Hence the series provides a comprehensive overview of the company immediately prior to its closure.
Each volume is broken into several sections, reflecting subdivisions of the category of assets being considered. Within most sections, pages are numbered consecutively, however there is no overall consecutive page numbering system. Each volume contains an index at the front which gives a reference to a section of the volume and a page number within that section.
A sequence of case files relating to the arbitration accumulated or created by the Tramways Board has been registered in VPRS 7821.
