This series consists of the inward correspondence of the Hawthorn Tramway Trust (VA 2978) for the period 1914 until the passing of its functions to the Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramway Board (VA 2964) in 1920. In the P1 consignment Units 1 and 3 are marked "Inward 1", and "No. 4", respectively. Units 1, 2, and 3 have the date range of contents written on the spine but Unit 4 has no series control symbols. The volume covering the period 1915 to 1916 is not extant.

The correspondence relates to the general administration of the Trust and includes matters such as:

    - general enquiries from the public
    - appointments and resignations
    - employees, unions, councils
    - inspector's reports
    - patriotic causes and fund raising
    - contracts and tenders
    - pamphlets from suppliers
    - matters of procedure and policy
    - Engineer/Manager of Depot
    -

The correspondence is arranged chronologically by date of receipt. Each volume has an alphabetical index arranged under correspondent's name which records all correspondence page numbers allocated to correspondence from each correspondent. Page numbers are written in blue pencil at the top right hand corner.

Each page has a reference to the page numbers of related previous and subsequent correspondence within that volume also marked in a blue pencil. These can be distinguished from the page's other number as they are in a 'fraction' format, with the 'previous' number on the top, and the 'subsequent' number beneath. ie. 22/45 A tick indicates no related correspondence.

Related correspondence from the Trust may be found in VPRS 7804 Outward Letter Books.
