How to use the Records
This series lists classification numbers for the second of two multiple number inward correspondence series relating to the Victorian prison system. The files (and index) were established by the Prisons Division of the Social Welfare Department and subsequently maintained by the Correctional Services Division of the Department of Community Welfare Services and have been registered as VPRS 7458, Policy Files (Multiple Number 2).
Although this index controls VPRS 7458, it is not the prime controlling series. The prime record is a series of index cards which have been retained in secondary storage by the Office of Corrections. The cards are arranged according to a combination of primary and secondary numbers and detail those numbers; tertiary numbers; date file opened; file title and file movement history.
The file classification index details primary and secondary numbers and most tertiary numbers, other than those for prisoner client files 2/1 - 2/26. A copy of the relevant pages of this list has been placed in each box of VPRS 7458.
In 1983 VPRS 7458 was replaced by a series of files controlled through an annual single number system. The annotation "cancelled" found against some entries in this index refers to those files which were top numbered into the new series.
