How to use the Records
These records were collected by officers of the Ministry of Transport in 1987 when it was feared they were in danger of being destroyed. The fate of any related records is unknown. The random nature of the files is also a result of their collection.
The files all bear a prefix "MBV", which probably refers to the Marine Board of Victoria. A separate number has also been allocated to each file possibly indicating either a sequential or classified registration system.
Files MBV16 to MBV38 contain general correspondence relating to functional and legislative responsibilities such as administration of pilot services, port management, vessel owners/operators, etc. The correspondence is to/from members of the public, companies making use of the services of the Marine Board, and inter-agency letters from such areas as Pilot Services, Port Authorities, etc.
File MBV44 contains matters such as safety issues including incidents arising from excess speed, and transport and handling of petroleum products. Matters such as retired or old pilot vessels are also covered under this registration number.
Files MBV48 and MBV50 relate to personal employment history and as such are closed for public access.
