  • How to use the Records
There is an index by patient name at the front of each volume.

Most patients are allocated a trial leave number, however the meaning of this number is not known. Initially, in volume 1 the numbers follow sequentially in two separate sequences for male and female patients. Later the numbers go out of sequence because the same number from the original trial leave is reused when a patient has trial leave for a second time. In later volumes there appears to be no order at all to the entries in the volumes. The same numbers are used again for other patients but in no apparent order.

Volumes 1-3 were used from both the front and back concurrently.
Volume 1 pp 1-82 read forwards. pp 83-101 read backwards
Volume 2 pp 1-67 read forwards. pp 68-101 read backwards
Volume 3 pp 1-43 read forwards. pp 44-101 read backwards
Volumes 4 and 5 were simply worked forward.

In volume 4 the number sequences start from 1 again but the numbers do not stay in a strict sequence.

  • Function / Content
This series records male and female patients' trial leave.

    Details recorded include:
    patient name,
    date of admission,
    period of leave allowed,
date returned to Asylum (or if discharged, under which particular section of the Lunacy Act the discharge was permitted) and the name of the person responsible for the patient while the patient was on trial leave.

  • Recordkeeping System
Series: Chronological by date of commencement of trial leave.
Contents: Chronological by date of commencement of trial leave. Index by patient name.

Entries are listed in chronological order from the date the trial leave commenced. Trial leave was allocated in six and twelve month periods. Groups of patients were allowed out on trial leave at the same time. Therefore you find a whole group of patients with the same time allocated, rather than different times for each individual patient. Leave was extended in some cases and the dates are recorded. Where further entries for trial leave for the patient are recorded reference is usually made to the next entry.

Volume 4 also records a list of patients boarded out between 1922 and 1923 on p.96.

A "New Book" is referred to in Volume 5, however this has not been recovered.
There are a few items of relating correspondence pinned in the volumes. Some information from earlier volumes is repeated in late
