  • How to use the Records
This series consists of the General Register of Male and Female Patients received into and discharged from Yarra Bend Lunatic Asylum. There is an index by patient name at the front of the volume.

    1. Admissions

The volume contains separate sequences for male and female patients and the information regarding their admissions appears to have been transcribed from the Register of Patients (see VPRS 7417). For each gender group there are two sequences. The first sequence records information about patients whose admissions were recorded in volume 1A of VPRS 7417 Register of Patients. These admissions date from October 1848 to September 1854. The second sequence in the listings for both males and females records information about patients admitted between September 1854 and December 1856. The Register of Patients for this period has not been located but annotations in the General Register make it clear that it once existed.

Information recorded includes a sequential number for each entry; patient name and admission number in Register of Patients; whether the patient was "pay or pauper"; when patient admitted; by what authority; form of insanity; date and cause of discharge. Although there are no entries for patients admitted after 1856, discharge details for patients admitted prior to 1856 continued to be recorded for many years.

    2. Discharged Patients

There are four separate listings of discharged patients,

    (a) List of patients cured,
    (b) List of patients discharged to friends or relatives,
    (c) List of patients escaped,
    (d) List of deaths.

    (a) List of patients cured.

Patients are listed in chronological order from their date of discharge. Male and female patients are listed together. Each patient is allocated a sequential number. However this is not an exclusive discharge number as the same numbers are reused in other discharge lists. Details documented include the name of the patient, admission number, when patient was admitted and when discharged.

A notation at the top of the list indicates that this list was previously listed in a "Daily Ration Book" however this record has not been recovered.

    (b) List of patients discharged to friends.

This is a list of all those patients who were discharged to the care of friends or relatives as their mental state was considered to be "improved" rather than "cured". It is recorded in the same format as the list of cured patients. In addition it lists the person(s) to whom they were discharged. These people are not named, they are listed as "to her husband" or "to his friends".

This list is also continued from "Daily Ration Book".

    (c) List of patients escaped

This list is in the same format as the two lists above but there are no numbers allocated to the entries. Other remarks, for example, "drowned" or "readmitted" are also recorded, however no date for these occurrences are recorded.

    (d) List of deaths

Patients are listed in chronological order by date of death. Male and female patients are listed together. Each patient is allocated a sequential number. Details documented include name of patient, when admitted, date of death and where buried.
