Description of this SeriesDescription of this Series
  • How to use the Records
The Albury Wodonga Development Corporation was established in 1974 as a joint venture between the Commonwealth, NSW and Victorian Governments. There are in fact three Corporations : the Albury-Wodonga Development Corporation establishment by Commonwealth legislation, and the Albury-Wodonga (New South Wales) Corporation and the Albury-Wodonga (Victoria) Corporation established by legislation of the respective States.

The Albury-Wodonga Development Corporation is responsible for urban and regional planning and development, construction in designated areas, growth centre promotion, negotiations with Federal State and Local Government agencies, protection of the environment, and involvement of the local community in the planning process.

The New South Wales and Victorian Corporations are responsible for acquisition, holding, management and provision of land in areas designated for development; and for provision of municipal-type services and levying charges in new urban areas.

In reality the three Corporations work as a single entity responsible to a council of the relevant Ministers from the Commonwealth and two State Governments. The records of the Corporations form a single record group, the status of which is subject to negotiation between the relevant archival authorities. The Australian Archives are providing survey and storage facilities for the Corporation's records.

The Corporation holds a set of minutes and agenda for meetings of the Corporations. While the Minutes for the Victorian Corporation could eventually be transferred to the Public Record office, the Minutes of the AWDC would be transferred to Australian Archives.

This series is a set of AWDC agenda, papers and minutes which were sent to the Department for information, as it has been the Ministry which has had responsibility for the Albury-Wodonga function. The minutes are to be retained permanently so that a copy is available for access in Victoria.

The first lot of minutes which start with the minutes of the Interim Development corporation Meetings and the first meetings of the AWDC are contained in special purpose binder which has been transferred as it stands. The rest of the series was held in two-ring looseleaf binders which were too large to put into archival boxes. Therefore, the minutes were transferred to manilla folders for boxing and listing and item numbers were allocated.

It is not a complete set of agenda papers and minutes. Since there are some gaps in either agenda or minutes. However, for most meetings there is a copy of either the minutes or the agenda. There are a few odd copies of the minutes of the Victorian Corporation included with some meeting papers.
