  • How to use the Records
    The subject index maintained in the Department until the introduction of the RMS seems to have been commenced when the multiple number series was established in 1979. However, it contains references to files from other series which were not top numbered but which were still required for reference on occasions.

    It seems that the index maintained must have been culled at some stage as a small quantity of the index was found in secondary storage and forms the first consignment of the series. The culled cards appear to be either rewritten cards, or the files were renumbered, retitled or amalgamated which led to the need for new subject index entries. The consignment should be retained even if, to some extent, it is duplicated by the current cards, as the evidence of top numbering is valuable.

    Indexing is mostly by file title, with authorized subject headings. There is some cross referencing but it is not well defined or consistent.
