The Division used the single number series (VPRS 7305) for registration of both company and correspondence files. However, it seems that at some stage (by 1964) the correspondence files became too complicated to keep track of under this system and sub files under the primary numbers began to appear. They had a two or three digit file number depending on the degree of sub-classification. This practice sufficiently altered the appearance of the files to justify treating these files as a separate series. Thus the contents predate the series.

The common factor in the files is that all the primary numbers are in the 400's. There is also evidence in later series of top numbered correspondence files with 400/-/-number, so possibly the extended numbering of one or two single number files resulted in a new series with all primary numbers in the 400's. Unfortunately with no registration records extant for either series is difficult to be certain.

The files still in existence cover such subjects as trade missions, hostels and publicity. They consist of loose papers and backing sheet held together with a filing lace and a small tag on the top containing file number and title.

It seems likely that the series was discontinued when the new annual single number series was introduced in 1976. Later additions to a few files have resulted in the contents post dating the series.
