  • How to use the Records
    To obtain information from indexes to births, deaths or marriages, researchers should access the relevant databases available online in the Reading Rooms.

    Seven indexes compiled from registers of births, deaths and marriages are available online in the Reading Rooms:

    - Pioneer Index 1836-1888
    - Federation Index 1889-1901
    - Edwardian Index 1902-1913
    - Great War Index 1914-1920
    - Marriage Index 1921-1942
    - Death Index 1921-1985
    - Marine Births, Deaths and Marriages Index 1853-1920.

    For further information about births, deaths and marriages outside the date ranges of those above, enquiries should be directed to the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages in Melbourne or from their website: www.dvc.vic.gov.au/bdm.htm

    Certificates may be obtained from the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages for a fee.

  • Function / Content
    This series comprises Indexes (hard copy, P3 consignment) and Microfiche copy P1 and P2 consignments ) to Marriage Registers created to provide access to marriage registrations. The hard copy indexes were replaced by computer generated microfiche indexes in ? 1984 and by Lifedata, the computerised system of indexing in 1989. Microfiche copy of the index for the period 1853 - 1913 has been transferred as VPRS 7289/P1 and P2 consignments of this series. For hard copy see P3 consignment.

    This series provides access to entries in VPRS 8342 Registers of Marriages for the state of Victoria.

  • Recordkeeping System
    Volumes in the series were arranged in chronological order by year of registration. Entries were made in alphabetical order by surname in each volume.
