    System of Arrangement/Control

Series : Letters arranged in numerical order according to sequential number registration by date of receipt.

    Range of Control Symbols

    Series : 1 to 3890

    Series in Custody : 6 to 3890

This series consists of correspondence received by the Melbourne Tramways Trust (VA 2692) and registered in the Engineer's Office between October 1884 and July 1894. The correspondence is controlled by VPRS 7192 Inward Correspondence Register : Engineer's Office. It is not clear whether the Engineer's Office continued a separate correspondence registration system after this date. It is evident, however, that the responsibility for registering letters relating to engineering matters was not assumed by the Secretary's Office, which maintained an identical sequential number correspondence registration system for the official correspondence of the Tramways Trust -

See VPRS 7859 Inward Registered Correspondence
    VPRS 8072 Inward Correspondence Register

The letters extant range from No.6 (1884) to No.3890 (1894) and were found in three bundles, each bundle reflecting a numerical arrangement by registration number. It is apparent that not all letters registered are extant in the P1 consignment of this series.

When this series was transferred it comprised two boxes of correspondence. It was subsequently discovered that the correspondence in Unit 2 did not belong to the Engineer's sequence but rather to the general sequence of correspondence. It has therefore been made a P2 consignment of VPRS 7859.
