  • How to use the Records
    System of Arrangement/Control

    The index cards are filed alphabetically by company name in two series, one from 1851-1879 and the other from 1880 to 1890. Alphabetical cards divide the first series to help in the location of company names.

    Range of Control Symbols

    A - Z
    First series: 1851-1879
    Second series: 1880-1890


    This series contains index cards of the names of companies sending letters to the Chief Secretary. The index was prepared in 1970 from VPRS 1411 Chief Secretary's Office, Index to Inwards Correspondence. VPRS 1411 is divided into classified headings and from 1854 Companies were listed separately.

    The listing included:
    the name of Company
    the date received
    the nature of business
    the registered number.

    The card index has a separate card for each company, the file number and sometimes a summary of the nature of the business is included. Between 1851 and 1853 there is no indexed heading Companies in VPRS 1411 and the entries include many institutions which would not have been indexed after 1853. The file number relates to VPRS 1189, Chief Secretary's Office, Inwards Correspondence.
