    System of Arrangement/Control

Series : Annual single number system superimposed in top left of letter, adjacent to other numbering sequences.

    Range Control Symbols

Series in Custody : 1836/204 - 1848/90; missing many items.

Outward correspondence from Melbourne Survey Office (i.e. Port Phillip Branch of Surveyor General's Department) to Surveyor General. Letters registered in chronologically by date of despatch. Control/registered sequence superimposed over Surveyor General's Inward Registered Number and Surveyor in Charges more general outward correspondence (see VPRS 6). Correspondence concerned with regular reports of land sales and occupation of lands within Port Phillip District. Some surveys are also within this series (see also VPRS 15). This series is incomplete - it is thought that some material may lie within VPRS 44 whilst the rest is lost - see file in box 6 which documents this fact. it is thought that these files are all Melbourne Office working copies, and presumably, gaps could be filled from A.O.N.S.W. - Surveyor General; Inward Registered Correspondence from Melbourne Survey Office. Some files are purely file covers; whilst others are comprehensive with enclosures of maps, charts and so on. Related material may be found in VPRS 19 - and subsequent information in C.S.O. Land Branch records (VPRS 2877, 2878) or VPRS 44.

    Research Note

Researchers should be aware that VPRS 5 has traditionally held a great deal of miscellaneous Surveyor General's material. The old numbering box 3 and 4 contained a great deal of VPRS 19 (Superintendent's) material and VPRS 2877, 2878 and 1189. (Colonial/Chief Sec., Land Branch files). These have now been returned to the respective boxes in original registered order & researchers should carefully examine the registers of these series. Series 5, though incomplete, is now one group of records with one single control number system.
