Description of this SeriesDescription of this Series
  • How to use the Records
Consult the Records Description List for the unit containing the date range for which information is required. Entries were made in chronological order of receipt with each piece of correspondence being given an annual single number which became the eventual file order for the correspondence.

  • Function / Content
The Victoria Police was formed with the passing of the 1853 Act for the Regulation of the Police Force. This vested overall responsibility for the police in a Chief Commissioner appointed by the Governor and established a system for the appointment of other officers with the terms and conditions of their employment. The Office of the Chief Commissioner of Police performed an essential role in central management and administration of the Police Force providing central control, supervision, administration and coordination.

This series was created to exercise control over the correspondence received by the Chief Commissioner and the Victoria Police. Each piece of correspondence received was registered by this series. Correspondence was then indexed by subject in VPRS 10257 Index to Correspondence and filed. Filed correspondence may be found in VPRS 807 Inwards Correspondence, Annual Single Number. It was given an annual single number with a short summary of the contents of the correspondence.

  • Recordkeeping System
Entries were made in chronological order by date of receipt of the piece of correspondence. Each piece of correspondence was given an annual single number as an identifier. The Victoria Police used a letter prefix to the number , originally as a reference to the Department and the year and later, as a reference to the year only.
