How to use the Records
** Access Conditions **
These records have been transferred to the Public Record Office Victoria under the condition that requests for access will be referred to the Clerk of the Legislative Council/Assembly for determination in each case. Applications should be made to the above officers and written approval must be presented at the Public Record Office Victoria reading rooms before the records will be made available for public inspection.
Consult the Consignment Details for the required unit number.
Function / Content
This series consists of cash books, which record the payment of salaries to clerks and other employees of the Legislative Council. The particulars of payments made are recorded on the right hand page: Date, Particulars (usually names of those receiving payment), Number of cheque, and Amount.
On the left hand page the reimbursement of the amounts paid out in salaries is recorded. The entries are on the left hand page separate salary payments made from the Appropriation Acts (Schedule D, Part IV recorded the amount required to pay clerks and expenses of the Legislative Council) and payments made out of General Revenue.
This series was previously registered with the title Regulation Cash Book.
In 1999, two additional units of the Salaries Cash Book were found to have been incorrectly registered as separate series in PROV holdings. They have been reserialised as the P1 consignment. VPRS 5159/P1 Unit 1 was previously registered as VPRS 5153 Collectors Cash Book, and Unit 2 was previously registered as VPRS 5147 Cash Book.
Recordkeeping System
The records in this series are arranged chronologically, by the date the salary payments were made (usually on a monthly basis). All payments for the month are recorded together: sometimes the names of those receiving salaries are arranged in alphabetical order, and sometimes no discernible system of arrangement is used.
