  • Recordkeeping System
l below for an explanation of the two systems of arrangement used for the records in this series.

    Function/Content
This series is a register of reading material issued to prisoners.

It records the date the book/magazine was issued and the date it was returned, the title of the book, its number (presumably from an internal catalogue system), to whom it was issued (surname of prisoner) and the prisoners cell number.

This series was originally registered as a record of the Penal and Gaols Branch (VA 1464) upon transfer to PROV custody. However, it is extremely likely that this series was created by a Victorian penal establishment (for example, the recording of cell numbers).

Researchers should note that many of the records listed under the Penal and Gaols Branch, the Prisons Division and Correctional Services in the List of Holdings relate to particular prisons and youth training centres, and are subject to further research in terms of the agency which created them. To date, it has not been possible to establish the provenance of this series conclusively, thus the recording agency has remained as Penal and Gaols Branch.

It is known that there was a library at Pentridge Gaol as early as 1865. Under the regulations, prisoners were allowed to borrow one book per week.

    System of Arrangement and Control
Two systems of arrangement are used in this series.

In Unit 1 the entries are arranged chronologically, with entries made as books were issued to prisoners.

In Unit 2 the record keeping system changes for a period, and the information is arranged by prisoner, showing the numbers and titles of all books issued to that prisoner. The dates of issue/return are not recorded. There is an index to the entries arranged by this system at the front of the unit. These entries also record details of the transfer or discharge of prisoners, where applicable.

For entries from c.1899 in Unit 2, the system of arrangement reverts back to the system used in Unit 1, ie chronologically, by date of issue.
