How to use the Records
Researchers will need to know the approximate date of the hearing they are interested in. Scan the entries for the appropriate period.
Function / Content
The framework for the Governor of a prison to hear charges is set up by section 51 of the Corrections Act 1986. Section 51 allows the Governor several options regarding charges against prisoners. The Governor may refer the charge back to the Chief Prison Officer for action, hear the charge, refer the charge to the police (this occurs if the charge is serious) or request that another governor hear the charge if they believe that they may have an interest which would prejudice a fair hearing.
These records contain the date of hearing, name of prisoner, name of reporting officer, details of offence including the number of the relevant regulation breached and the result of the hearing.
Prior to 1986 the Governor may also refer the charge to the Visiting Justice. See VPRS 11766.
Recordkeeping System
