  • How to use the Records
Get the volume and the page number reference from the Index (VPRS 4403).

Refer to the Records Description List for this series and call up the appropriate volume.

  • Function / Content
Under the provisions of section 25 of the Public Service Act 1883,(No.773), and subsequent Acts, the Public Service Board (VA 886) was required to keep a record of all officers and employees in the public service, their length of service, salaries and wages and other employment details.

This series comprises volumes which record employment details of officers of the Victorian Public Service.

    The information recorded includes:

Name of the officer or employee
Name of the Department and the Branch
    Date of birth
    Date of appointment
    Designation, Salary, Certificate No.
    File reference number,
Other information (date of resignation, date of permanent appointment, date of death, etc).

This series ended in 1925 when the Board started to record the particulars of public servants on cards (refer to VPRS 9889).

  • Recordkeeping System
The volumes are arranged in sequential number order (1 to 30). Within the volumes entries were made under each category of employment (Clerical, Non Clerical or Professional) within the individual Department. The initials of the departments are marked on the spine of the volume.

An index to the volumes was created as part of the recordkeeping system (VPRS 4403). The index is arranged by surname and provides the volume and the page number.
