Description of this SeriesDescription of this Series
  • How to use the Records
Consult the Index (VPRS 4406). This provides access by name to the registers which are arranged chronologically.

  • Function / Content
Under the provisions of Section 33 of the Public Service Act 1884 (No 773) and subsequent Acts, the Public Service Board (VA 886) was required to register the names of fit and proper persons desirous of employment in any temporary work in the Victorian Public Service. The Board was also required to record the kind of work desired by such persons.

This series comprises Temporary Employment Registers created under this requirement. The Registers document the Boards function as an employment agency.

The Temporary Employment Registers were one source from which temporary employees were selected. Temporary employees could also be recruited by Departments, and through internal and external advertisements.

    The information recorded includes:

name, date of birth and address of the applicant

registration number allocated and date of registration

    correspondence number

nature of work (Clerical) or General (included Assistant, Draughting Assistant, Chauffer, Draughtsman, Lab Assistant, Labourer, Lift Attendant, Machinist, Messenger, Office Cleaner, Telephonist, Typist).

name of the Department employed in.

  • Recordkeeping System
There are separate volumes for clerical work (marked Clerical) and all other works (marked General). However, the volumes are arranged in a single number sequence.

Entries were made chronologically within each category of employment (in the volumes marked General) or by Department (in the volumes marked Clerical). A list of categories of employment, can be found in the front cover indicating the page reference of each category of employment or Department. The Registration numbers commence from within each category and again within each volume.

Correspondence relating to temporary employment was incorporated into the Boards central recordkeeping system. The extant files are located in VPRS 774.

An index to the Register is located in VPRS 4406. The Index provides access to the volume and the page reference numbers of the registration details by the names of applicants.
