Description of this SeriesDescription of this Series
  • How to use the Records
The files are arranged alphabetically by the names of the Teachers College / Hostel.

Note that the records in the P0 consignment were reprocessed and are not in P1.

  • Function / Content
This series consists of files containing papers and correspondence relating to the construction, alteration and maintenance of Teachers College and Teachers Hostel buildings in Victoria. All works were undertaken by the Public Works Department (VA 669) from 1885 to 1947 on behalf of the Education Department (VA 714). Upon completion, all buildings passed into the control of the Education Department.

The content of the files changed significantly in circa 1956. To this date the files contained papers pertaining to all aspects of construction and maintenance. From circa 1956 the only papers added to the files in this series were documents pertaining to minor works and routine maintenance.

  • Recordkeeping System
The files are arranged in alphabetical order by the names of the Teachers Colleges/Hostels.

    To 1956

Between 1885 and 1913 the correspondence in the files shows evidence of having been registered under an annual single number system. From 1913 no registered papers appear on the files.

To 1956 a single file was maintained for correspondence and papers on all aspects of building matters.

    1956-1974

From circa 1956 correspondence began to be segregated and attached to one of a number of separate files relating to building matters. The files in this series came to comprise only papers relating to minor and routine works and were known as maintenance files.

Separate files were created for capital expenditure works for teachers colleges (VPRS 8798), capital expenditure works for teachers college hostels (VPRS 8799), temporary premises, furniture (authorised for destruction), fencing (authorised for destruction), subsidies (authorised for destruction), and special grants (authorised for destruction). The above file series were authorised for destruction by the Keeper of Public Records in 1992-93.

The series ended in 1974 when responsibility for the administration of teachers colleges was transferred to the State College of Victoria (VA 437).
