    Function / Content

    This series consists of post-metric building plans created by VA 669 Public Works Department and subsequent agencies. These plans were created from the commencement of the metric system of weights and measures, replacing plans which were created under the previous system (VPRS 3686 Pre-Metric Building Plans).

    The plans relate to works carried out by this Department on buildings which it designed and/or constructed including government department offices, schools, hospitals and police stations. Various types of building plans including architectural, structural engineering, electrical, mechanical and civil/hydraulic plans are included in this series.

    Each plan also contains a registration number; plan name and date.

    System of Arrangement and Control

    Each plan has a registration number which comprises an annual single number and an alpha-numeric suffix. The annual singe number comprises a year which indicated when the plan was created and a number which referred to the job number. The alpha-numeric suffix indicates the size of the drawing.

    Plan numbers are allocated from a register held in the Plan Room office identified above. The plans are indexed by a sequence of cards also maintained there. These cards serve to identify all plans for a particular building. There may be a number of cards created for a building, each identifying particular types of plans. These may include cards which record all of the architectural, structural, civil/hydraulic, electrical and mechanical plans for the building.

    The plans are physically arranged in bags in registration order - approximately 20 per bag. In each bag there is a detailed list of each plan. This list details the reference number of the plan (when each plan is filmed it is given a consecutive number); plan name; registration number and whether the plan has been retained by the controlling Department. A copy of these lists is retained in the Issues Office, Laverton Repository.

    Microform copy

    All of the plans in this series have been progressively microfilmed since 1981. The microform copy is in the form of aperture cards (VPRS 3822, Post-Metric Building Plans - Aperture Cards).
