Description of this SeriesDescription of this Series
  • How to use the Records
    If the date is known, researchers can locate a record of an issued certificate as the arrangement is generally chronological.

    If the date is not known, researchers should consult the alphabetically arranged Index to the Register of Burials (VPRS 18437) to locate the family name of deceased persons buried prior to 1994 or of persons who purchased the right to burial in the cemetery prior to 1994. The references will be to page numbers in VPRS 18436 Register of Burials. The entry in Register of Burials (VPRS 18436) provides details including date of purchase/burial and the registration number, either of which can be used to search for the issuing of a certificate in this series.

  • Function / Content
    This series comprises of certificates that were issued to confirm that an individual had pre-purchased a plot. The certificate was either detached from a stub along a perforated page and held by the person as proof of their purchase, while the corresponding stub remained in the custody of the cemetery.

    There are instances where a copy of the certificate was made and the original stub being kept by the cemetery and the copy given to the purchaser.

    The details recorded vary depending on the era, but may include the following:
    - reference number;
    - certificate number;
    - number of plot;
    - number of compartment;
    - denomination;
    - name of person purchasing plot;
    - conditions of purchase;
    - date of purchase;
    - signatures of trustees;
    - signature of secretary.

  • Recordkeeping System
    The records in this series are arranged chronologically by date.

    The Index to the Register of Burials (VPRS 18437) provides an alphabetised listing of family names of every person buried or holding a reservation (right of internment) prior to 1994. Each entry records a name and a page in the Register of Burials (VPRS 18436) which in turn records a sequential burial registration number, date of burial and other details which can then be used to locate an entry in this series.
