Description of this SeriesDescription of this Series
  • How to use the Records
    For burials or plot reservations known to have taken place between 1858 - 1993, researchers should consult the alphabetically arranged Index to the Register of Burials (VPRS 18437) to locate the surname of the deceased person who has been buried or the surname of the person who has purchased the right to be buried in the cemetery. The references will be to page numbers in this series, the Register of Burials (VPRS 18436)..

    If a surname is not known, or if the burial or plot reservation took place after 1993, researchers will need to know the approximate date of death or burial of the deceased, or the approximate date of a plot reservation, to locate an entry within the register.

  • Function / Content
    This series comprises the register of burials for Creswick Cemetery (VA 5208). All Victorian Cemeteries Acts required cemeteries to keep registers of burials.

    Information recorded for each burial may include:
    - register number;
    - name of deceased;
    - age of deceased;
    - late address;
    - rank or occupation;
    - denomination (within cemetery grounds);
    - section (within cemetery grounds);
    - number of grave;
    - private (family paid for both burial and plot) or common (family paid for burial but not plot);
    - size;
    - date of burial;
    - cause of death;
    - fees paid;
    - remarks.

    This reegister was also used to record details about plot reservations purchased prior to a burial.

  • Recordkeeping System
    The register is arranged numerically starting at 1, which was allocated as burials took place or as reservations for plots were made. Reservations are indicated by the use of the preceding burial register number followed by a letter of the alphabet - usually A but if several reservations made in succession then B, C, D etc until the next actual burial which would be the next number in the sequence.

    The Index to the Register of Burials (VPRS 18437) provides an alphabetised listing of family names of every person buried or holding a reservation (right of internment) between 1858 - 1993 and provides access to this series, the Register of Burials (VPRS 18436).
