  • Function / Content
Cards record basic information on each candidate at a State Election.

Cards are arranged in four sequences:

    (i) Members of the Legislative Council of New South Wales for Victorian Electoral Districts (1843-1851). Information recorded: Electoral District; Date of Election; Remarks e.g. when the member left the Legislative Council.

(ii) Members of the Victorian Legislative Council following separation from New South Wales in 1851 to responsible government in 1855. Information recorded is the same as above.

Note: Prior to responsible government members were either nominated or elected. After responsible government members were elected and there were two houses in the Victorian Parliament, the Legislative Council and the Legislative Assembly.

(iii) Members of the Victorian Legislative Council following responsible government: Electoral Province; Date of Election; Whether Elected; File No.; Remarks.

(iv) Members of the Victorian Legislative Assembly following responsible government: Electoral Province; Date of Election; Whether Elected; File No.; Remarks.

Where a member moved from one house to another there is usually a card for each house both with an annotation referring to the other house e.g. see Council Card or see Assembly Card.

The card entry for File No. on both the Legislative Council and Legislative Assembly cards is a reference to a file in the Chief Secretary's Inwards Registered Correspondence (VPRS 1189 (1851-1863); VPRS 3991 (1864-1883); VPRS 3992 (1884-1963); VPRS 4723 (1874-1963) and VPRS 1226 (1851-1957)). This file number refers to a Return of Particulars of Election for the electorate contested by the candidate. The return provides voting statistics for the electorate including each polling booth in the electorate.

  • Recordkeeping System
