Description of this SeriesDescription of this Series
  • How to use the Records
Consult the Record Description Lists for the date range covered by each unit. Each unit contains entries for all officers who received salary payments during this date range. Entries are arranged by rank (highest to lowest) in the case of records for Officers and Subs (ie, officers holding rank of Senior Constable and above) and arranged by Register Number for police officers (Constables). Currently there are no control records to police Register Numbers in PROV custody.

If the researcher is seeking a particular police officer, and knows their Register No, the range of Register Numbers covered in each volume for police officer records is also noted on the RDL. If the researcher is searching for a police officer of a higher-ranking officer, request the units for Officers and Subs for the desired date range.

  • Function / Content
Victoria Police Force (VA 724) was established under the control of the Chief Commissioner of Police in 1853. The administrative structure of this agency made the distinction between public service staff (sometimes referred to as 'unsworn members', working within the Police Department and the Office of the Chief Commissioner of Police) and the police force itself (those serving as police officers). In the Blue Books for this period, the Police Department and General Police are two separate branches within Chief Secretary's.

This series records the fortnightly payment of pay and allowances to police officers or sworn members. The entries record the financial year, details of each officers fortnightly payments received, deductions made and allowances claimed. Other information is recorded, such as the station or branch at which the officer worked, and details of any promotions, discharges or transfers to other stations.

Please note that salary records from employees of the Police Department and Office of the Chief Commissioner of Police can be located in VPRS 4402 Record of Public Servants 1884-1925 and VPRS 9889 Record Cards of Public Servants 1925-1977 (these series were created by the Public Service Board [VA 886]).

A previous series is in PROV custody: VPRS 1775 Register of Police Salaries and Wages 1905-1925. The subsequent series is VPRS 1785 Salary Cards.

  • Recordkeeping System
The records in this series are in chronological order, and two systems of arrangement were used. Separate volumes were kept for constables, as distinct from Officers and Subs (higher-ranking police officers, such as senior constables, superintendents, etc).

The volumes for Officers and Subs are arranged by rank, from Chief Commissioner down the hierarchy to Senior Constables.

The entries for lower-ranked officers are in separate volumes. These are arranged in Register Number order (the number assigned to each serving officer in the Police).
