Description of this SeriesDescription of this Series
  • How to use the Records
Using this index, plan numbers can be identified for Record Plans registered for a particular Parish or Township. Plan references for each Parish or township are arranged alphabetically by name of Parish or Township. Each line under the Parish or Township heading relates to a plan registered in that particular Parish or Township.

Note: each index entry can comprise both the last updated Record Plan and references to earlier plan numbers. Therefore, the indexes can be used to trace back the Record Plans to the earliest surveys in each locality, or to work forward through the sequence of updates to the most recent plan.

If the record plan covers more than one Parish or Township, the plan will only be identified and indexed under one of the localities on the plan. Therefore, it may be necessary to search under a broader range of parish or township names to locate relevant plans.

Make a list of plan numbers of interest from the index. Search within VPRS 16306 to locate and view plans of interest.

    Note:

This hard copy index is closed under section 11 of the Public Records Act 1973. Researchers may use the Microfiche copy of this series located in VPRS 16935.

  • Function / Content
This series comprises the original index to the Parish and Township Record Plans, also known as the Put Away Plans.

Entries are arranged alphabetically, generally by Parish or Township name, although there are some subject-based headings such as Aboriginal Reserves and Cemeteries.

Under each locality name (e.g Hawthorn) the following details of plans are provided -
    - a field note reference (year and number - usually expressed as a fraction),
    - Other features shown on the map may also be listed here (e.g. township of Kew)
    - Plan number allocated to the plan. e.g. H17, 'H' being the first letter of Hawthorn. Most plans will be numbered with the plan number beginning with the first letter from the name of the Parish or Township
    - General Crown description of land covered by the plan (i.e., sections/allotments/portions. For example, plan H17 covers town allotments Section 1, allotments 1-8 and Section 4, allotments, 1-13.

'C' indicates a Compilation plan, ie the plan has been drawn from a compilation of exiting plans.
'S' is found within many entries. This indicates that the plan has resulted from a survey.

An entry for a Compilation Plan is often accompanied by an entry for the Manuscript version.. It is believed that the Manuscript versions were not microfilmed and therefore will not be located in VPRS 16931. Compilation plans include the same base information as manuscript plans but the compilation plans were used by the Department as working record plans as details of Crown land dealings were added to them during their working life.

Note about the date range: it is uncertain when this series commenced, however the contents date backs to c.1837.

It is understood this series was effectively the master index for all the Record Plans created by the Department and is likely to have been maintained and stored in Melbourne throughout its active life. Other versions of the Index are known to exist and were possibly created for reference in the various District Survey Offices of Land Offices.

In c.1985 this Index series and the Put Away Record Plans (VPRS 16306 p1) were microfilmed. A microfiche copy of each series has been transferred to PROV, see VPRS 16935 and VPRS 16931 respectively.

Also around 1985, this series was photocopied (see VRPS 16720) and the photocopied version became the working record for the Department until November 2001.
